Civil Case Types Handled in Kenai

The Kenai Superior Court handles general jurisdiction civil matters. This covers any civil lawsuit regardless of dollar amount, so long as it arises in the Kenai area or involves parties with a connection to the Third Judicial District. Contract disputes, personal injury claims, property line disputes, and civil negligence cases all fall under this jurisdiction.

The Kenai District Court handles limited civil jurisdiction. Civil cases under $100,000 go to the District Court. This includes wage claims up to $20,000, which the court handles under specific rules for payment disputes. Small claims cases with values up to $10,000 are a faster and simpler option for smaller disputes. No attorney is required for small claims. The process involves less paperwork and moves to resolution quicker.

Domestic relations cases are among the more common civil matters in Kenai. Divorce, child custody, child support, and legal separation cases go through the Superior Court. These records are generally public under Alaska law, though some financial disclosures filed as part of a domestic relations case may be restricted. Probate cases, estate administration, guardianship petitions, and mental health commitment cases also go to the Superior Court.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough also has a Homer District Court at 3670 Lake Street in Homer, which serves the southern peninsula. The Seward District Court at 410 Adams Street serves the eastern peninsula. Civil cases in those communities go to those courts, not to Kenai. If you are unsure which court handles your case, check the case number prefix. "3HO" cases are Homer, "3SW" cases are Seward, and "3KN" cases are Kenai.

Access to civil records in Kenai is governed by AS 40.25.110 and Alaska Administrative Rules 37.5 through 37.8. These rules define what is public, how access is provided, and what is restricted. Most civil records are open to public inspection.
